PSA Rattlesnakes

Living outside of civilization has its perks, however I have some not so fun neighbors. Each year I have to deal with snakes. Out here I only have one venomous snake, the prairie rattlesnake. They're very small. Reaching only about 2 feet at their largest. They blend in very well with the dirt, and are difficult to see. I have snake shot in my 22 long revolver, in the instance I have to keep me and my animals safe. I don't prefer killing them, and I would rather not, if I can avoid it. I have read that they are very aggressive, but that's not been my experience. They just want to be left alone. This year I have had a few interactions with them, as I do every year. I've had 2 dogs get bit in the last 6 years. Both survived and haven't had any problems, fortunately. Much of the time they will rattle to warn me that they are there. Since they are so small, their rattle isn't very loud. I generally try to have my phone playing music with me, and they usually will avoid me. I was told to carry anything that makes noise. The best one I heard, that I have yet to try, is an aluminum can with rocks in it. Just something to alert them to your presence. They are not predators to humans, and they just want to avoid us. I have mice so I have snakes. It's just the way it is. They were probably here before I got here. Many of my friends and neighbors ask why I don't kill them all, and I am not wired that way. I love animals and I have respect for most of them. I will kill them to protect myself and my animals, but I've seen many people put themselves in more danger trying to kill them or catch them. I prefer to leave them be, when possible. Snake repellent is very effective to reduce snake activity for about 2 weeks. Moth balls are also very effective and they work for mice also. I just ensure that the dogs can't get to the moth balls, as they are toxic. I also wear gloves and do not use indoors. Snake season is fortunately almost over. I have a better plan for next year and will be eliminating places for them to hang out by next summer. Please be safe out there, and if you happen upon a snake leave it alone. Most people are hurt trying to capture them or moving them or trying unsuccessfully to kill them. You might want to contact a professional to rid your home of snakes. If you take matters into your own hands, please be careful. Happy fall, friends, Ceeeej
